Animal Biology, publishes high quality papers and focuses on integration of the various disciplines within the broad field of zoology. The mission of the organization is to recognize and support academic excellence in the biological sciences and encourage undergraduate research, primarily through undergraduate research awards and conferences. Using cutting-edge live-cell imaging approaches, the Hayer lab investigates how cells coordinate with each other during collective cell migration. Our faculty actively pursue extramural funding to support research programs that also train undergraduate students who act as collaborators in the development of that research.
Interviews are not designed to test factual knowledge, instead, they show an applicant’s ability to think and to understand the biological knowledge they have accrued up to that time. He called these units « cells. » In 1676, Anton von Leeuwenhoek published the first drawings of living single celled organisms. Biological sciences are the foundation of contemporary agriculture. However, the most significant development in biological knowledge came when humans transitioned from hunters and foragers to farmers, cultivating crops and perfecting agriculture.
The fundamental principles of biology that are acceptable to this day include cell theory, gene theory, evolutionary theory, homeostasis, and energy. Khrapko’s lab is studying mutations in mtDNA and their effects on cellular physiology, aging and disease. Indeed, in some circles, the emphasis on molecular biology and its philosophy of reductionism caused initial tumult for many evolutionary biologists who felt that the autonomy of biology was challenged as it stood to be engulfed by the physical sciences (Mayr, 1982; Wilson, 1996).
Four unifying principles form the foundation of modern biology: cell theory, evolution, genetics and homeostasis. Students who study the biological sciences will be able to pursue many career avenues particularly within research, teaching, sales and in field work roles. Evolution is the change over time that is the engine of biological diversity. Whatever the initial tension between the two disciplines, newer methods and critical insights made their way into evolutionary biology leading to a new area of research traveling under the new banner of molecular evolution.
New directions in biological research especially from the discovery of the structure of DNA in 1953, as well as new techniques made available in sciences like biochemistry and genetics were at first only slowly integrated by evolutionary biology. Biology pre-health students and others from UNC traveled to Spain over the summer to gain clinical hours, cherished memories and insights from physicians on what it truly means to be a healthcare professional.
